The Complete Guide to Windows BitLocker Encryption: TPM, Recovery Keys, and Data Protection

For more details, watch the YouTube tutorial.

In the digital age, protecting personal privacy and data security has become particularly important. Many people believe that setting a Windows login password is sufficient to ensure computer security, but in reality, this approach is effective only for ordinary users; for those with some technical expertise, a login password is virtually meaningless.

Are login passwords really secure?

The fact is that through certain technical means—such as using tools like the PE (Pre-installation Environment) system—it is easy to bypass the Windows login screen and gain direct access to all the data on the hard drive. This means that if your computer is lost or falls into the wrong hands, the person in possession can, with just a few clicks, gain full access to the files, photos, documents, and even sensitive information such as account credentials stored on your computer.

How Can You Truly Protect Your Data? Enable BitLocker Encryption!

To prevent this from happening, Microsoft has built a powerful data protection feature into the Windows operating system—BitLocker Full-Disk Encryption。

What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is a disk encryption technology developed by Microsoft that can encrypt an entire hard drive. Once enabled, the system will require a password or a trusted device (such as a USB encryption key) to boot normally and access the contents of the hard drive.

Advantages of BitLocker:

  • ???? Even if the hard drive is removed, its contents cannot be read.: Without the unlock key, the data cannot be accessed;

  • ???? Preventing Data Breaches: Even if a computer is lost or stolen, information security is still ensured;

  • ✅ Built into the system; no need to install additional third-party software;

  • ???? Supports automatic key management via the TPM chip(For computers that support TPM);

The PE system can't read it either? Yes!

Many hackers and technicians like to boot their computers into a PE environment to bypass login passwords and access files. However, once BitLocker is enabled, the encrypted hard drive cannot be read in the PE environment unless the correct unlock key or recovery password is provided.

This fundamentally prevents the possibility of data on your computer being accessed through “technical means.”

How do I enable BitLocker?

  1. Open “Control Panel” → “Systems and Security” → “BitLocker Drive Encryption”;

  2. Select the drive you want to encrypt, then click “Enable BitLocker”;

  3. Set a password or choose how to save your recovery key;

  4. Just wait for the system to finish encrypting the data.

???? A Friendly Reminder: Before enabling BitLocker, we recommend that you back up your important files and keep your recovery key in a safe place to prevent data loss in case you forget your password.

With encryption, even if your computer is lost or the hard drive is removed, unauthorized users will not be able to read the encrypted data—giving you true peace of mind!

Why can't a login password replace disk encryption?

The Windows login password primarily protects the account session. If a device is lost, an attacker might remove the hard drive, boot from an external system, or read unencrypted partitions. BitLocker encrypts the entire volume, making it difficult to directly access the data when the device is powered off without the recovery key.

Pre-Startup Inspection

  • Verify whether your version of Windows supports BitLocker management or device encryption.
  • Check the TPM status, Secure Boot, and BIOS/UEFI updates.
  • First, back up your important files and ensure a stable power supply.
  • Prepare at least two recovery keys and store them separately in a trusted account and an offline location.

Start the Process

  1. Select the system drive under “Manage BitLocker” or “Device Encryption.”
  2. Select TPM, PIN, or another unlock method based on your device's capabilities.
  3. Back up your recovery key and do not store it only on the same computer that is encrypted.
  4. Select the encryption range and mode, start the encryption process, and wait for it to complete.
  5. Restart the test and verify that the recovery key can indeed be found.

Mistakes to Avoid

Do not store screenshots of your recovery key only on your local machine; before replacing the motherboard, updating the firmware, or adjusting boot security settings, you should verify that the recovery key is accessible. BitLocker is not a substitute for cloud or offline backups; accidental deletion and hard drive failure can still result in data loss.
