D525 Feiniu NAS Installation Hands-On: Startup Errors, Partitioning Failures, and Optimization for Older Hardware

When it comes to tinkering with NAS systems, I’m sure many of you have had this experience: an old machine with limited performance that you just can’t bring yourself to throw away, always wondering if there’s a way to keep it useful. That’s exactly the case with my little D525 mini-PC. It’s been with me through all my experiments with Synology DSM 6, DSM 7, and OMV, and it wasn’t until I recently installed Feiniu NAS that I finally found the right balance.

The D525 Mini PC Runs the Feiniu NAS System

Why Choose Feiniu NAS?

  • Synology DSM 6 runs smoothly and is easy to use, but DSM 7 is so laggy on older hardware that it makes you question your life;
  • OMV is stable, but it lacks the fun of “playing around”;
  • Feiniu NAS (FnOS) perfectly combines the best of both worlds, and since it’s free and open-source, it’s just too tempting for tinkerers.

The installation process didn't go smoothly.

If you think setting up a Feiniu NAS will be a breeze, you might be in for a disappointment. In my experience, I’ve run into just about every pitfall there is:

  • USB Drive Burning Failed: BalenaEtcher keeps failing to launch.
  • Error 452: Rufus 4.5 reports an error upon booting after burning:Out-of-range pointer 8xbf557f68...only to discover in the end that I had to downgrade to Rufus 3.15 to fix the problem.
  • Partitioning Failed: Replacing the SSD multiple times didn't solve the problem; even installing it in recovery mode resulted in an error.
  • Secure Boot Issues: I had to go through the official documentation to find the root cause; I was finally able to install it successfully after disabling Secure Boot.

The Meaning of Experimenting

It’s hard not to get frustrated during the tinkering process, but when the Feiniu NAS finally ran smoothly on the D525, its seamless performance and stability made it all worth it. Seeing old hardware still shine is what makes tinkering so much fun.

If you're also having trouble installing Feiniu NAS, Error 452, SSD partitioning failed, USB drive boot failed For these issues, you can refer to the detailed guide I’ve put together on how to avoid common pitfalls.

Is the D525 Really Suitable for the Feiniu NAS?

The Atom D525 is an older, low-power platform suitable for file sharing, downloads, and lightweight media libraries; it is not suitable for real-time transcoding, multiple virtual machines, or a large number of containers. Before deciding to continue using it, you should verify the compatibility of the motherboard’s SATA ports and network card, as well as the memory capacity and the health of the hard drive. For critical data, the fact that the system boots up does not necessarily mean it is suitable for long-term production use.

Thorough Preparation Before Installation

  • Download the current image from an official source and verify the file integrity.
  • Prepare a reliable USB flash drive and make a note of the current disk order to avoid accidentally formatting the data drive.
  • Disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, and select UEFI or Legacy boot depending on the image requirements.
  • Temporarily disconnect the data drives that are not involved in the installation, and reconnect them one by one after the system installation is complete.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting Steps

"Out-of-range pointer" error

These types of errors are typically related to the boot medium, boot mode, or the version of the burning tool. You can try downloading the image again, using a different USB drive, switching between UEFI and Legacy modes, or using a stable version of Rufus. In the test environment described in this article, booting was restored after using Rufus 3.15, but this does not mean that the same version must be used for all hardware.

SSD Partitioning Failed

First, make sure the drive does not contain any important data, then check the SMART status, SATA cable, power supply, and controller mode. Residual RAID/LVM partition tables on an old drive can also interfere with the installation; try again after clearing the partition table on another computer. Do not execute the format command before confirming the drive letter.

Lag after installation

Shut down unnecessary containers and indexing services, avoid real-time transcoding, and prioritize the use of wired Gigabit networks; if the system or data disk frequently reports errors, replace the hard drive first rather than continuing to optimize the software.

Checks That Must Be Completed Before Going Live

  1. Create at least one independent backup; RAID is not a substitute for backup.
  2. Test SMB file read/write operations and disk mounting after a reboot.
  3. Enable SMART monitoring and temperature alerts.
  4. Configure a UPS or a safe shutdown policy.
